Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of shade color and various types of planting media on the growth of papaya (Carica papaya L.) seedlings in polybags. The study was conducted in the experimental field of the Faculty of Agriculture, Asahan University, Jl. Ahmad Yani, Kisaran Timur District, Asahan Regency. North Sumatra Province in January to February 2020. The design used in this study was a Split Plot Design (RPT) with three replications. The main plot is the shade color consisting of 3 levels, namely: N0 = white (control), N1 = black, N2 = blue. The subplot is the planting media consisting of 3 levels, namely: M0 = Topsoil, M1 = Topsoil + Rice Husk Charcoal (1:1), M2 = Topsoil + Sawdust (1:1). Observed variables include plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, and wet weight of leaf blades. The results showed that shade color affected the stem diameter at 4 WAP and 6 MST. The provision of planting media affects plant height at all observation ages, number of leaves at all observation ages, stem diameter at all observation ages and wet weight of leaf blades. The interaction of shade color and planting media does not affect all observation parameters.
