Abstrak

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in improving students’ mathematical thinking skills on the Exponent topic among Grade X students at SMA Negeri 1 Simpang Empat in the 2024/2025 academic year. This quasi-experimental research employed a pre-test–post-test control group design with two classes: an experimental class receiving PBL instruction and a control class taught through conventional learning. The average pre-test scores of the experimental and control classes were 69.11 and 66, respectively. After the learning intervention, the average post-test score of the experimental class increased significantly to 84.61, while the control class achieved only 57.37. Statistical analysis using the t-test revealed that the calculated t-value (t_hitung = 4.42) exceeded the critical t-value (t_tabel = 1.67), indicating a significant difference between the two groups. These findings demonstrate that the PBL model has a positive and significant effect on enhancing students’ mathematical thinking skills in Exponent material. Therefore, PBL can be considered an effective alternative instructional approach for mathematics learning at the senior high school level.
