Abstract

Misconceptions in mathematics often occur when students try to apply rules they understand from a two-dimensional environment to a three-dimensional context without proper adjustments. Based on the analysis of the two definitions of the inverse function, it shows an inconsistency in the formulation of mathematical concepts. Definition 3.4 on page 103 and summary number 8 on page 116 provide conflicting definitions regarding the domain and codomain of the inverse function which proves the existence of misconceptions. The study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data collection is also carried out by utilizing two types of data sources, primary data and secondary data. Primary data comes directly from the contents of the book being analyzed. Secondary data is obtained from the General Mathematics Learning Module for Grade X High School as a comparison material. The contribution resulting from this study is practical, namely as input for teachers in providing additional clarification when using open books and as a consideration for authors or compilers of books to be more careful in formulating definitions and example questions.
